His father died on a trip to England on a mission for the colony when John was twelve. After his mother sold some of their lands, she returned to England with her four children. John later returned to Rowley, Massachusets, to sell the remaining properties of his parents and settle his father's estate. John and Hannah first moved to Bradford, Massachusets, and then to Haverhill, Massachusets, where he was a well-known citizen. John became a lieutenant in the state militia.

The will of John Carlton of Haverhill made January 15, 1668: "I give unto Hannah, my wife, that house, with orchard lot, forty of upland, five cows and all my sheep, household stuff and all my implements of husbandry. When debts are paid, the rest of my land and estate divided amongst my sons, my son John to have a double portion. My children shall be put out apprentices to some honest calling or trade. I appoint my wife to be the executrix. I give the frame that I had raised for a barn to my wife and all those boards that I am now owner of".

Edward was the immigrant ancestor of all Carltons (Carleton) in the United States who stem from the 17th century New England families of that name. He was a Puritan.

Ellen, his wife, owned considerable property in Ryhill and Cammerton, which she sold in April, 1638, just before she and Edward, with their baby son, John, sailed for America with the company of Rev. Ezekiel Rogers for Rowley, Massachusets, in the ship "John of London". They established themselves in Rowley in 1639. Edward was one of the five men chosen "to order the affairs of the town". In 1642, Edward took his freeman's oath. Historians believe that Edward invested considerable money in property in Rowley. He certainly was a leading citizen. In November, 1643, he was one of a committee chosen to survey and lay out the town, and in 1646, he was assigned a three acre lot. At the first town meeting in 1647, he was chosen "to judge every man's portion of land".
