They first lived at Summit City then later moved to the farm at Almartha where they lived until their deaths. John owned medical books and often helped sick neighbors. He was, as his father before him, an accomplished horseman. He owned a grandson of the great Dan Patch that had set a number of world records, some still standing from 1900 to 1910. John's horse was five-gaited. The horse lived to be 29 years old and died in 1930. Julia rode him until her death in 1927.

John had the mail route from Almartha to Romance to Willhoit to Gainesville three times a week, all by horseback. He was a shareholder and a director of the Bank of Hammond. He was a charter member of and helped to organize the Oak Grove General Baptist Church at Wasola. He was a respected community leader and was strict about his children's attending school.

Zera enlisted in the military as a Private in the Union Army, Company B, 16th Missouri Cavalry, July 31, 1864, age 45 years, at Springfield, Missouri, and served for 20 months as a saddler. He mustered out on July 1, 1865.

Zera had blue eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion. He was 5 ft., 7 inches tall and a farmer by profession. He bought and sold property in Ozark County many times during the years he lived there.

Stephen Parnell (1), b. ABT 1762 in Maryland, d. ABT 1834

The Parnell name originated in France and arrived in England around 1066 with William the Conquerer.

While a resident of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, Stephen enlisted as a private the third of April, 1778, Ellicott's Mills, Fourth Maryland Regiment, Captain Norwood's Company. He deserted while on furlough the fifth of May, 1780. He filed for a pension thirtheenth of November, 1832 in Decatur County, Indiana. He was rejected the 4th of February, 1833.

According to tax records, Stephen lived in Madison County , Kentucky, until around 1816 when he moved to Dearborn County, Indiana, where he remained until about 1824. He moved from there to Decatur County, Indiana. No further records were found on him. Several children, Andrew, Isaac, James, William, and possibly others, followed him on his moves. They all left Decatur County before 1840.
