Geoffrey was Lord Chief Justice of England off and on from 1324 to 1338. Because of his skill as a soldier he was in demand for the king’s various campaigns. More than once he resigned his post as Chief Justice for that purpose, and his brother Henry often acted as his replacement. He was also such an in-demand lawyer and negotiator that he survived politically the transitions in government of Edward II in 1326 and Roger de Mortimer in 1330.
