He is the head of one of the four branches of Lawsons that moved to Maries County from Tennessee in the 1830s. They may have lived a while in Indiana.

It has been handed down by word of mouth that when the original Lawsons arrived in the western area of Maries County, the grass was so high it reached the belly of a horse, that the streams were white with clouds of feathers from wild ducks and geese, and that the bee trees could be cut and split like troughs full of honey. The Lawsons were home and they still rest in the Dick Lawson Cemetery established in 1878 on that same land.NOTE: the "Dick Lawson" cemetery is now called the Jim-Matt Lawson Cemetery
