He was captured early at the Battle of Lewes, but quickly escaped into the Lewes Priory, where he was said to have been found after the battle disguised as a monk. He was also one of the twelve arbitrators to negotiate the surrender of Kenilworth Castle following the Battle of Kenilworth in 1266
Alan had a suit against John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey over an estate. On 19 June 1270, when it appeared he was to win his case, de Warenne and his men attacked, seriously injuring Alan and running his son Roger from the court. Warenne made peace with the crown and paid compensation to the la Zouches on 4 August. Alan died six days later.
