William came to Concord, Massachusetts with Rev. Peter Bulkeley's followers from Odell, Bedforshire, England. He left Concord after the births and deaths of two children and went to Southampton, Long Island, then to Fairfield in 1644 with the group led by Rev. John Jones of Concord.

Cranfield, Bedord, England, is a small parish about eight miles from the village of Odell. The Cranfield church register records nearly seventy entries of O'dell baptisms, marriage, and burials between 1602 and 1625, the name variously written Wodell, Odell Odle, Woddell, Woddle, etc.
