Hugh de Baliol, Baron of Biwell, b. ABT 1182 in Stokesley, North Riding, Yorkshire, England, d. 2 May 1229

Father: Bernard II de Baliol, b. ABT 1140 in Tessdah, Scotland, d. 1194 in Barnard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England
Mother: Agnes de Picquigny, b. ABT 1130 in Barnard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England
Hugh held Barnard Castle against incursions by the Scots under Alexander II, as well as other fortresses along the River Tees.

The lineage of the Baliol family is the subject of much confusion. About all anyone agrees on is that the names are Hugh, Bernard, Guy, and Eustace; the order changes depending on the source. The lineage I use here is the fourth one I have tried and the only one for which the dates work. Still, it may not be correct.

Father: Bernard I de Baliol, b. ABT 1105 in Bywell, Northumberland, England, d. ABT 1167
Mother: Matilda de Bywell
Several children are attributed to Bernard, yet other sources say he had no children at all. That Hugh and Annabel are both his children, or at least his children by the same wife, is unlikely.

Bernard II is thought to be responsible for most of the building at Barnard Castle. He joined Robert de Stuteville in relieving Alnwick Castle in 1174, where he took prisoner William "The Lion", King of Scotland.

Bernard I de Baliol, b. ABT 1105 in Bywell, Northumberland, England, d. ABT 1167

Father: Hugh de Baliol, b. ABT 1070 in Bywell, Northumberland, England
Following the death of his uncle Guy, Bernard inherited the lands in Gainford and expanded the ringwork fortress at Scar Top. The new stone castle acquired his name, Barnard Castle, as did the town which soon grew up around it.

Bernard supported King Stephen and participated in the Battle of the Standard in 1138. He was also captured with Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln on February 2, 1141.

Some sources list his children as Ingram (Enguerrand), Guy, Eustace, Bernard, and Hawise. Others list Bernard, Hugh, and Amabel. Notice that Bernard is the only one both sources agree on. Although some sources list Bernard as the son of Reginald or Renard there are too many years between them to not have aother generation.

Father: Wydo de Baliol
He is sometimes called Renard or Rainald. Reginald accompanied William the Conquerer, possibly as the vassal of Roger II de Montgomery whose niece he married. He may be the same person as Pierre, Knight of Balliol and Fecamp who provided a ship and twenty men at Hastings. He may also be a relative of Pierre.

His father is sometimes listed as Guy de Baliol (meaning Guy I, the founder of Barnard Castle) however all sources, including those making this claim, say that the Bernard from whom the castle got its name was a nephew of Guy I and not a direct descendant. Others list his father as Joscelin de Bailleul.

Most sources say Reginald married Amiera (Ameria) de Montgomery (b. ABT 1025 in Montgommery, Saint-Germain-de-Montgommery, Lower Normandy, France, m. Warin de Hesdin, Sheriff of Shrewsbury, d. 1077 in England), niece of Roger II de Montgomery.

Ingram (Enguerrand or Ingelram) is said to be the son of Joscelin, son of Guy de Baliol. Joscelin was probably the cousin of Bernard I de Baliol. I have included the parents listed here only because I have seen them listed several times and they tie things together nicely. Alternatively, he may have been born around 1165 in Harcourt, Normandy, France.
