Father: Ranulf II de Warenne, b. ABT 998 in France
Mother: Emma de Warenne, b. ABT 1020 in France
The Warenne family is supposedly well documented, yet we have found very little reliable information beyond William; even the origins of his wife are unclear. He was wounded in the first Siege of Pevensey Castle, taken back to Lewes Castle and died there. He was buried in the chapter house of Lewes Priory (Priory of St. Pancras) next to Gundred. His grave was covered with a white slab, and hers with a black one. Both tombstones disappeared years later. The bodies of William and Gundred were discovered during the excavation for the railway which now goes through where the Priory used to be. They were moved to St. John’s Church in the Southover neighborhood of Lewes.

Spouse: Gundred of Flanders, b. ABT 1052, d. 27 May 1085 in Castle Acre, Norfolk, England, cause of death was childbirth, bur. at the Priory of St. Pancras, Lewes, Sussex, England

Father: Notary of Flanders, b. ABT 1020, d. ABT 1052
Mother: Matilda of Flanders (2)
There is a lot of confusion about Gundred’s parents; some sources claim she is the daughter of William the Conquerer, while others claim she was the sister of Gerbod the Flemming. Sill others say she was the daughter of Matilda of Flanders prior to her marriage to William. Although we have entered her mother as a different Matilda of Flanders, it does seem to suggest that Matilda of Flanders had an affair with the Notary.

Unlike that of William, Gundred’s tombstone was discovered at Isfield Church over the grave of Edward Shirley. William Burrell, Esquire, had it removed on 2 October 1175 and it was placed in the Gundrada Chapel at St. John’s Church in Southover. When we were there in June of 2015, the chapel was also being used for storage. We could not get in to the room where Gundred’s stone was nor get a good picture.
