Berengeria's marriage to Alfonso was arranged to stop the wars between England and Spain. It was annulled by Pope Innocent III due to her kinship with Alfonso. She ruled as Queen of Castile and Leon for a few months after the death of her father in 1214 and again after the death of her brother, Henry I, in 1217. She then proclaimed her son, Fernando III king of Castile in 1217.
