Duncan is often called Donnchadh. After his father died his cousin Roland (Lochlann) tried to take his inheritance. This angered King Henry II, who was Duncan’s protector. Henry threatened to invade Galloway and, in the end, Roland (Lochlann) kept most of Galloway, and Duncan was given the new earldom of Carrick.

Uhtred was co-ruler of Galloway along with his brother Gilbert. During the revolt against the Normans which followed the disastrous invasion of Northumbria during which King William I was captured, Gilbert mutilated, blinded, castrated, and killed Uhtred.
