Donald recognized the claim of Alexander III's daughter Margaret to the throne, and after her death in 1290 supported Robert the Bruce. However, he was one of the Earls who referred the issue to King Edward I of England. He swore fealty to Edward but was a leader of the Scottish uprising against the English. Donald was captured by the English at the Battle of Dunbar on 27 April 1296, and renewed his allegiance to England.
