He fought in King Edward I's wars against the Scots and Irish, yet vied for the Scottish crown as a grandson of Ada, third daughter of David, Earl of Huntingdon. Henry led the Londoners at the Battle of Lewes where he was taken prisoner. He fought at the Battle of Evesham and resisted King Henry III at Kenilworth. After the Dictum of Kenilworth he commanded the last remnants of the baronial party at the Isle of Ely. He submitted to the king in July 1267.

William was born Guillaume de Lusignan. Trouble in Poitou after the conquest by France compelled William and his brothers Guy and Aymer to accept the invitation of King Henry III to go to England. William acquired the Earldom of Pembroke (the first of a new creation) through his marriage to Joan, a granddaughter of William Marshal. He participated in the Battle of Lewes, and fled to France following their defeat until 1265. After he returned to England he became the leader of the English campaigns against the Welsh led by Llywelyn ap Gruffudd and Dafydd ap Gruffudd. He negotiated the surrender of one of Dafydd's last castles and was on the King's council during the Great Cause to determine succession to the Scottish throne.
William's arms were Barry argent and azure a label of five points each charged with three lions rampant argent. After becoming Earl of Pembroke they were changed to Barry argent and azure an orle of martlets gules.
