William was the 4th Lord of Bramber. He was responsible for the Abergavenny Massacre, 1175, in which he tricked three Welsh princes and other leaders into attending a Christmas feast at Abergavenny Castle, where he had them killed. It is believed that he hunted down and killed the only surviving son of Seisyll ap Dyfnwal, Cadwaladr, who was seven years old. William was responsible for Arthur of Brittany, who he had captured at the Battle of Mirebeau in 1202. He was suspected in Arthur’s disappearance and murder.
William later fell out of favor with King John, and his lands were seized. He fled to Ireland, but had to return to Wales when the king began searching Ireland for him. He allied himself to Llywelyn the Great during his rebellion against King John, and in 1210 fled to France disguised as a beggar.

Following William’s exile in 1210, Maud was arrested along with her son William and his children. Maud was very vocal about her suspicions that King John was responsible for the death of Arthur of Brittany. She and her son were walled up in the dungeon at Corfe Castle and allowed to starve to death. William’s young children were later released in 1218.

John’s father and grandmother Maud were arrested by King John in 1210 and walled alive in the dungeon at Corfe Castle. John was hidden away in Gower and spent time with his uncle Giles, but was captured in 1214 with his younger brother Philip. King John died in 1216, and the brothers were released in 1218. He purchased the honour of Bramber from his uncle Reginald in 1226, and received the other lands when his uncles died.Spouse: Marared (Margaret) of Wales, b. ABT 1202, m.
