It is not really known who Leopold's father is. The lineage here is one of the suggested possibilities, another is Berthold, Count in the Nordgau

In 994 Leopold went to Würzburg to mediate a dispute between his cousin Henry of Schweinfurt and Bishop Bernward von Rothenburg. He was struck in the eye by an arrow intended for Henry, and died two days later.
