Humphrey's coat of arms was "azure, a bend argent cotised or between six lions rampant or", as seen to the left of this page (or at the top if you are on a tablet, but not at all on a phone). His death at the Battle of Boroughbridge was particularly brutal as described by Ian Mortimer: "[The 4th Earl of] Hereford led the fight on the bridge, but he and his men were caught in the arrow fire. Then one of de Harclay's pikemen, concealed beneath the bridge, thrust upwards between the planks and skewered the Earl of Hereford through the anus, twisting the head of the iron pike into his intestines. His dying screams turned the advance into a panic".Spouse: Elizabeth of Rhuddlan, b. 7 August 1282 in Rhuddlan Castle, Denbighshire, Wales, m. In October of 1321, Queen Isabella stopped by Leeds Castle on the way to Canterbury. Bartholomew was away and had left the castle in the care of Margaret, who refused entrance to the Queen. She even had her archers shoot at the Queen's escort as they approached. King Edward was very angry at this treatment of his wife, and sent an army to Leeds. After a five day siege Margaret surrendered, at the last possible moment, with a promise of mercy from Edward. Twelve of her men were hanged from the battlements, and Margaret, along with her five children, were arrested and sent to the Tower of London. Margaret was the first woman imprisoned in the Tower.
