Although we have Roger’s father listed as Ranulf I de Warenne, his nickname, "fili Episcopi", which means "son of the bishop", suggests he was the son of Hugh, Bishop of Coutances. He was known to be a close relative of William I de Warenne, and some sources make him William’s uncle. That is how we have it, though the issue of him being the son of Hugh is not resolved.
Roger was one of William, Duke of Normandy’s (the Conquerer) generals at the Battle of Mortemer in 1054. However, he gave quarter to William’s chief rival, his father-in-law Ralph III "the Great", for three days until Ralph could find safe passage back home. When Duke William found out he exiled Roger and confiscated his lands. Still, upon his father’s death, he took the name Mortemer.
