Orderic Vitalis says he was "excessively addicted to the lusts of the flesh and distractions of the world" and that he was deposed because "he gave too much attention to hunting and hawking, and consumed the treasures of the church in a splendid mode of living". Another suggestion is that he wished to annul his nephew, the Duke’s, marriage due to consanguinity.

Mauger helped his brother William, Count of Talou, in an attempt to overthrow their nephew William II, Duke of Normandy. He was banished to the Isle of Guernsey. It was said that he "made a deal with the devil", went mad, and drowned himself.
